Ubuntu shows off new "Light" theme

Beginning with the release of Lucid Lynx (10.04 LTS), which is expected to hit PCs at the end of April, Ubuntu's UI will no longer look like it came about as a result of a bad accident in the ladies room. Gone are the days of overly suffocating brown-ness. From here onward, Ubuntu will come in a new theme, called "Light."

90 million copies of Windows 7 have been sold

At a Morgan Stanley Tech Conference, Microsoft’s Peter Klien announced that 90 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold to date, making it the fastest selling operating system in history. Microsoft released Windows 7 on October 22, 2009. The operating system has received praise from consumers, businesses and the media. In November 2009, Windows 7 managed to surpass Apple's Snow Leopard market share in just two weeks. In early February it was revealed that Windows 7 had reached 10% market share in just three months.

Beware of fake Security Essentials 2010

One of the oldest tricks used by rogue antivirus products is to use a similar name as, or have a similar look and feel to, legitimate security software. It’s been commonplace for them to mimic the Windows Security Center. So it was inevitable that the day would arrive when a rogue would masquerade as something similar to Microsoft Security Essentials. If anything, it surprises me a little that it’s taken so long.

Translate Web Pages in Google Chrome

Google Chrome 5's dev build has a feature that detects the language of a web page and lets you translate it without opening a new page. The feature is borrowed from Google Toolbar, but Google Chrome is the first browser that translates web pages without requiring an add-on. When you visit a page written in another language, Chrome shows an infobar that asks if you want to translate the web page. You can ignore the message, change the language that was automatically detected or translate the web page.

Skype prepares for HD video calls

Video calling on Skype has been hit or miss over the years, but with some back-end changes in Skype for Windows 4.2, the company readies its VoIP client for high definition. Without providing much detail, Skype noted in a blog post that when high-def Webcams pop onto the market, Skype's update "includes almost everything you'll need" to place HD video calls.

Windows 7 piracy check update goes live

Earlier this month Neowin reported that Microsoft would be rolling out a new piracy check update for Windows 7. The update is said to check for 70 known activation exploits by checking the local PC. Upon realizing that a copy of Windows is not genuine, the program will change the user's desktop to black, leave a watermark showing that it's not a legal copy, and bug the user with notifications. According to Engadget, the update is finally beginning to make its way to people's computers. The update is vaguely titled "Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB971033)." For 32-bit systems, it will probably say "for x86-based Systems." Just check the KB number to be sure.

Kaspersky has patented hardware antivirus

Kaspersky Lab reported about the successful patenting in the U.S. hardware anti-virus system to effectively deal with rootkits. As part of the new technology are encouraged to use hardware anti-virus - a device neutralizing the most common type of threats - malicious programs which reside on a hard drive or infect existing files on it. The patented anti-virus checks the data to be stored on the harddisk, identifies malware and blocks their entry. The inventor - chief technology experts from Kaspersky Lab Oleg Zaitsev. A patent for new technology is registered U.S. Patent Office on Feb. 2, 2010 under the number 7 657 941.

85% of Windows 7 PCs are Underperforming

Windows XP holdouts take heart: New data from the exo.repository shows that better than 8 in 10 Windows 7 systems monitored by the exo.performance.network are running alarmingly low on physical memory. And nearly the same number are demonstrating significant delays in I/O processing – ostensibly due to heavy virtual memory activity as Windows compensates for insufficient RAM.

Google demonstrates phone that translates text

Google Inc. is working on software that translates text captured by a phone camera. At a demonstration Tuesday at Mobile World Congress, a cell phone trade show in Barcelona, an engineer shot a picture of a German dinner menu with a phone running Google Inc.'s Android software. An application on the phone sent the shot to Google's servers, which sent a translation back to the phone.

Intel and Nokia are merging Moblin and Maemo

This will create a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Called MeeGo, the open software platform will accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new Internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences. MeeGo-based devices from Nokia and other manufacturers are expected to be launched later this year.

Adobe to improve Flash support for OS X

Adobe has recently come in for criticism regarding its implementation of Flash support for OS X. Steve Jobs himself has been vocally critical of Adobe's browser plugins for Safari, blaming Flash as the number one cause of crashes on the Mac platform. Speaking last week at a "Town Hall" meeting, Jobs reportedly called Adobe 'lazy' and reiterated his belief that HTML5 will eventually negate the need for Flash.

KDE announces the immediate availability of the KDE Software Compilation 4.4, "Caikaku", bringing an innovative collection of applications to Free Software users. Office 2010 hits the release candidate stage

Microsoft has provided some early testers with a near-final "release candidate" version of Office 2010 as the software maker works to make the suite broadly available in June. "Microsoft made a release candidate available to members in the technology adoption program (TAP)," a Microsoft representative told CNET. "This is one of Microsoft's planned milestones in the engineering process; however (we) do not have plans to make this new code set available broadly." A beta version of Office 2010 was released in November and had been downloaded 2 million times, as of last month.

It’s official: Microsoft got it right this time. After the mistake that was Vista, Windows 7 was greeted like the second coming, and it many ways it really was better than its predecessor: less annoying, faster, smoother, more compatible with various pieces of hardware and software. Initial sales numbers and market share reports have shown that Windows (Windows) 7 is on the right track, but today it’s obvious that it will be one of the most successful products in Windows history, as it already caught 10 percent market share, approximately three months after it arrived on the market.

Download Google Chrome 5.0

The Google Chrome dev channel has been updated to version 5.0.307.1 for Mac OS X and Windows. Still in beta stage, Chrome is a lightweight yet powerful web browser developed by the people behind the world’t biggest and most popular search engine, Google. On the Windows side, Chrome developers have enabled users to properly set a default downloads directory on Vista and Windows 7 (except where it is the desktop). Another issue, where users would work on the Content Settings window and sub-dialogs, has also been addressed.
